Mola Mola
Mola Mola, demikian nama ikan ini lebih dikenal, atau Sun Fish. Ikan langka ini menjadi perburuan para penyelam dan photographer dari seluruh dunia. Beruntung,Indonesia tepatnya di Bali menjadi siklus penampakan jenis ikan ini.
Tidak tahu kenapa, ikan ini muncul di tempat yang sama setiap bulan Juli – September di sekitar Nusa Penida atau kadang Topekong, Candi Dasa.
Mola Mola dewasa bisa berbobot bisa satu ton dan diameternya 2 meter. Bentuk badannya aneh, hampir bulat dan tanpa ekor, dengan kedua sirip di atas bawah menjadi motor untuk bermanuver.
Mola Mola termasuk jenis pelagics yang hidup diperairan dalam, sampai sekitar maksimal 600 meter.
Ikan ini adalah jenis yang hidup di lautan tropis dan temperate – antara katulistiwa dan lingkar kutub. Ia hidup di temperature 10 derajat celcius ke atas.
Sifat lainnya adalah kebiasaan melakukan cleaning station di permukaan air. Ini merupakan cara ia mencari makan, dengan mengkonsumsi plankton dan sekaligus menghangatkan tubuhnya dengan sinar matahari.
Sebagian para ahli memprediksi ini cara mereka men’charge’ tubuhnya sebelum menyelam di kedalaman yang dingin.
Karakteristik tubuh Mola Mola hampir seperti jelly fish – ubur ubur, namun demikian ia juga diburu untuk hidangan dan sebagai bahan obat obatan terutama masyarakat Jepang dan Taiwan. Di beberapa tempat seperti Eropa dan Amerika ikan ini termasuk jenis yang dilindungi dari kepunahan.
